The Canada Water Agency's National Freshwater Data Strategy
On September 25 & 26th, 2024, the Canada Water Agency - a federal initiative operating under Environment and Climate Change Canada - hosted the National Freshwater Data Strategy Workshop at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario.
The workshop contributed to the broader goal of ensuring Canadians have access to reliable freshwater data for informed decision-making, and introduced the vision for a National Freshwater Data Strategy centered on inclusivity, accessibility, and collaboration. Participants provided input to help shape the strategy, identified key challenges and opportunities in freshwater data governance, and engaged in cross-sector collaboration. The event brought together representatives from government agencies, Indigenous communities, academia, and non-governmental organizations.
There was broad agreement on the need for a National Freshwater Data Strategy to create a unified approach to water data across sectors and regions. Key issues identified included access, trust, stewardship, standardization, and coordination. A summary of the workshop findings can be accessed on the Canada Water Agency’s website.
Moving forward, the Canada Water Agency will continue working with freshwater data communities and government partners to define priorities and actions for better water management.
